then what will I be when I grow up, I asked?<br \/>That\u2019s easy, she said, you\u2019ll be a river that will feed an ocean just as I do.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choose those that choose you.<br \/>Not every eye can see your coat of many colors<br \/>Nor can every ear hear your plaintive cries desiring belonging<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all fingers can touch the wounded places and the scars<br \/>Nor offer the healing touch of consolation.<br \/>Not all skin folks are kin folks<br \/>And strong enemies contribute to ones growth, too.<br \/>Rivers lose their identities once they reach oceans.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lose their identities\u00a0<br \/>And their contradictions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who is my mother and father asks the ocean?<br \/>Child of many streams<br \/>And many rainstorms<br \/>Where is your home\u00a0<br \/>And where will you lay your head?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What floodgates open because of intrepid questioning?<br \/>And, what Jerichonian walls crumble because of courageously blown conch shell horns?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funeral Pyres blaze in India<br \/>Telling two stories<br \/>One ancient<br \/>And one new<br \/>Tell me who I am as I inhale deeply<br \/>As the dust of the dead mingles and enters my nostrils\u00a0<br \/>reminding me that I am a sleeping god.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pandora\u2019s curiosity brought forth both plague and hope.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who is my family in all of this?<br \/>Like calls to like; but, can that call be answered?<br \/>All of this is mission; but, can it be accomplished?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My brothers and sisters have many names.<br \/>They ask questions as I do<br \/>And are not afraid of the answers that they receive.<br \/>By their curiosity my Family of Choice is known.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Tibet they are called Vidy\u0101dhara because they want to know<br \/>And knowledge is their seat.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the Lakota they are called Heyoka \u2014 contrarians for whom night is day and day is night<br \/>And, Reality is only just when and if it can be questioned.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In India they are called Brahmins because they seek the truth.<br \/>This cannot be achieved merely through bloodlines and birth within a family.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Yoruba Orishas, my family calls on Shango<br \/>And the Wise Women in my family venerate Yemaya.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American Griots,<br \/>Fearlessly tell your stories and sing your songs<br \/>And teach the children to sing, too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sing the songs that Grandma sang in the kitchen<br \/>Or as she danced on the laundry with her blessed feet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sing work songs and war songs<br \/>That helped men survive chain gangs\u00a0<br \/>And oppressive assembly lines.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sing bawdy songs and love songs\u00a0<br \/>That foment perilous rendezvous.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sing new songs of Hope and learn to call on The Mothers once again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How many more Mothers of Exiles can be named\u00a0<br \/>In this melting pot called America?<br \/>That hasn\u2019t yet finished melting<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not even close.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Gods came here to these shores with the people who brought them<br \/>Listen for the answers that they whisper<br \/>Even though we vaguely call upon them\u00a0<br \/>With dimly remembered prayers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let your peace fall upon all of those who will listen to you and receive you<br \/>But if they shun you<br \/>Shake off the dust of your sandal on their threshhold<br \/>As a testament against them and their house<br \/>Then walk on.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All it takes to make stone soup is<br \/>A pot<br \/>A stone<br \/>a story<br \/>And the willingness of Families of Choice to bring the rest of the ingredients.<br \/>All seasonings and flavors blend in a stew.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And all oceans eventually become rivers that feed other oceans<br \/>Losing both their identity and their contradictions<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am just a ghost driving a mitochondrial DNA machine made of:<br \/>Blood<br \/>Fat<br \/>Bone<br \/>Marrow\u00a0<br \/>Tissue<br \/>Ovum<br \/>And Sperm<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why am I even afraid?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(By Heidi Lindemann and Michael Perry)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Image Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/art\/collection\/search\/45434\">Metropolitan Museum<\/a>)<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mitochondrial DNA Mama told me a story She said:You are an ocean and I am a river that feeds you and makes you grow.
