A mere chess game it was
\nwhere a young lass had
\nto decide on the hue
\nof her chess pieces<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t like to be black
\nshe duly declared
\nnot a hint of anything<\/p>\n

no Freudian slip
\nno racism<\/p>\n

not even an appreciation
\n(in a manner of speaking)
\nof the import of her words<\/p>\n

I cringe almost instantly
\npeering around furtively
\nin the local library<\/p>\n

in the local library
\nthese things happen
\nnot just in places
\nof ill-repute<\/p>\n

(you know like
\nboard-rooms like
\nsub-committees like
\non official government forms
\nand in Public Holiday speeches like)<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t like to be black
\nmerely a game of chess
\ntwo sides of different shades
\none light and the other dark<\/p>\n

there are pawns too
\ndoing their bidding
\nsome pieces more
\nvaluable each trying
\nto capture the other<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t like to be black<\/p>\n

A mere chess game it was<\/p>\n

Our emperor\u2019s relapse into black-white during the anti-racial-non-racial-tolerance part of his Human Rights Day speech, reminds one that we have far to go, still, 21 March 2016.<\/p>\n
